The ScoutGuard SG565F is a high tech trail camera which offers a range of impressive features and capabilities to set it apart from the crowd. Built to be sturdy yet compact, it is a worthy option for outdoor monitoring of wildlife at any time of the day or night, whatever the weather.
The exterior casing is finished with a woodland camouflage pattern to make sure that it will blend in with its leafy surroundings, with the only giveaway being its large integrated flash.
The flash itself is worthy of note, as it has a xenon bulb and can illuminate subjects that are up to 73 feet (22.25 metres) away from the camera. For shooting in weak lighting conditions, this helps to improve the quality of the images that are captured. The eight megapixel sensor resolution delivers crisp, clear, detailed results.
The flash is so bright, in fact, that the camera can still capture colour images even during the hours of darkness, which helps it to outdo some other trail cams which stick with soupy-looking grey or green night vision imagery. Of course, once the flash has gone off, the subject is likely to be startled, which may not be ideal for every customer.
Included in the package is a remote control unit which comes with its own integrated LCD display, enabling you to plug this into the camera and change settings or review the images and videos that have been shot without any other memory card swapping or data transfer involved. This is ideal for on the fly adjustments and means you can keep tabs on what the camera has witnessed with less hassle.
Like other standalone trail cameras, the SG565F is able to operate on battery power alone and you only need to install four AA batteries to get it up and running. With standard alkaline cells onboard, it will have enough juice to shoot close to 3000 snaps before the energy is depleted, but this upper limit will be doubled if you instead opt for more expensive, higher quality lithium ion batteries.
An input for DC power is included if you want to go for a more permanent power solution, as well as an output that will let you connect the camera to a TV or monitor. Tripod mounting is an option thanks to the compatible bracket, which makes it a bit more flexible in terms of where it can be positioned.
This trail camera poses an interesting choice for buyers who might usually have considered an alternative model with infrared LEDs instead of a xenon flash. While it will be much more noticeable because of this design decision, the improved colour capture may give the SG565F the edge over its rivals if this is an important asset. The maximum video capture resolution of 640x480 offers clean, crisp shots that will impress with the level of fine detail.
