Battery Life

When you set up a camera trap in the great outdoors, you may not be able to return to it every day, every week or even every month. This is especially true if the camera will be monitoring an area that is not within convenient reach of your home.

In these cases, choosing a camera trap that has good battery life is clearly a wise move. There are a number of things which determine the battery life of a trail camera, with capacity being just one factor to consider.

Arguably more important than battery capacity are the features in a given camera which may prove to be a drain on this stored energy over time, as well as how you decide to use them. The best way to extend the battery life of any camera is to limit the number of images that are captured, avoid using video recording capabilities and turn off any wireless connectivity settings if they are present.

Some camera traps overcome the limitations of their onboard battery capacity by offering solar-powered recharging capabilities. This means that, in some cases, they can be set up and left in situ almost indefinitely without running out of power, although this is, of course, dependent on there being adequate sunlight to keep them topped up.
